Big Island Heluhelu Quiz Bowl Introduction

Welcome to the Big Island Heluhelu Quiz Bowl!

As an offshoot of the Newbery Quiz Bowl held for the past 30 years, we are pleased to announce the THIRD Annual Big Island Heluhelu Quiz Bowl to be held in the Spring of 2024.

Heluhelu is the ʻOlelo Hawaiʻi term for reading/to read/reader. This event will be open to teams of 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th grade readers. Any school, public or private, any library, any homeschool group may sign up for this competition. An organization is allowed to have a separate elementary team and a middle school team or a combination of elementary and middle school team members, with a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 5 team members.

Our intention is to provide a fun yet thoughtful competition about reading. There is such a wonderful wealth of contemporary literature for children in these elementary and middle grades. The books selected for this competition are a blend of American Library Association.

Newbery Medal winners and Honor winners, the Hawai'i State Public Libraries Nēnē Award
books (nominated and voted on by the children of Hawaiʻi), as well as highly-reviewed titles
chosen by the steering committee.
We hope to see you at the Big Island HeluheluQuiz Bowl event next spring!
